Fundraising
Read a Million Words is aiming to raise as much money as possible to provide new books to every school that has signed up. Activities such as storyteller and author visits, poetry slams and creative workshops around reading will all be provided as well as books.
You will be helping the thousands of children at school in Bristol and every penny really does count. Read a Million Words is a registered charity, which means that your donations go even further. We have supplied some information below, but we're always open to new ideas so please do contact us to let us know how you'd like to support us.
Business Buddy Opportunities
We are looking for 20 Business Buddies, to donate £500 each. This amount will secure a Champion School Book Fair. We use a local company who provide a 20% discount so a £500 donation will actually allow each school to choose £600 worth of books - enough to make a dramatic difference within a school.
Children are encouraged to be part of the book fair and class representatives will choose a selection for their peers. Children are more likely to read books they've chosen or which have been chosen by their classmates. Charlotte Mills, Literacy Coordinator from Teyfant Community School said:
'The children were really pleased to be involved with spending our grant in the book fair. All teachers commented on the discussions the children were having about the books and many asked when they could take them to share with friends. The children are in many cases reluctant readers. Seeing (and being able to touch and explore new books) and having ownership in deciding on new school books enthused so many. With new books the children want to read them and this in turn raises the amount of practice and attainment.'
