Champion Schools

Read a Million Words currently works with 30 Champion Schools in Bristol to help develop and sustain reading cultures and emphasise the importance of reading for pleasure.

Champion Schools receive invaluable support, resources and events from Read a Million Words throughout the year. This includes our brand new interactive website, materials and funding, as well as visits from some of the country's top authors and illustrators including Jeremy Strong, Kaye Umansky and Kev Sutherland, illustrator of the Beano.

Schools work with the Read a Million Words team to promote the idea that words are not just found in books but in all sorts of exciting places in the world around us. The project also focuses on key areas such as developing reading audits and environments, school libraries and building external relationships. Emma Payne, Literacy Co-ordinator at Hillcrest Primary School said:

'Becoming a Read a Million Words Champion School and working to encourage children to have a passion for reading has helped us develop our school libraries and reading projects and celebrate the diversity of our school community. An inspired reader is a successful learner and Read a Million Words goes a long way to helping us achieve that goal...'
