Manga Mania at Read a Million Words Comic Festival

Read a Million Words launches its second Comic Festival in association with the Bristol International Comic Expo from Monday 5th - 15th May 2007.

All week, Read a Million Words Champion Schools will discuss their favourite comics, create their own comic boxes, participate in comic workshops and write reviews of their favourite titles, all based around this year’s theme: ‘Manga Mania’. Classical Comics have also provided a free box of Macbeth, The Graphic Novel for each Champion School. From 9th - 15th May, all Champion School pupils are invited to attend the Bristol International Comic Expo.* Melissa Thom, Project Manager from Read a Million Words said:

‘Manga Mania has swept the nation this year and engages people of all ages. As well as inspiring Bristol’s young people with comic activities in schools, the Read a Million Words Comic Festival is a fantastic way to reignite the whole family’s interest in reading together. We‘re especially keen to get Dads along to the Comic Expo with their children at the weekend, to meet some of their favourite comic and Manga book artists and characters’.

As part of the Comic Festival, Read a Million Words are launching their ‘Design a Manga Character Competition’, where schools can win a whole school Manga library from Tokyo Pop – one of the UK’s largest Manga distributors. The competition is open to all Bristol school children 16 years and under. Children are asked to design their very own reading Manga Character. All designs should be accompanied by at least 10 words to describe their character. Closing date for entries is Monday June 16th 2008.
